How to Use Procrastination as Practice for Success

Many of us believe that success is about coming up with great ideas or doing the impossible, but most success is the result of doing the mundane. It's doing the things that no one wants to do. Whether it's losing weight, getting a better job, starting a business, doing well in school, or saving a million dollars, the process can feel largely unenjoyable at times, unless we push ourselves to see the greater goal.

In most cases, you know what needs to be done. The challenge is getting yourself to do it.

Dealing effectively with procrastination is getting yourself to do things you don't want to do. This is great practice for learning how to become successful! If you can defeat your procrastination, you can accomplish just about anything.

Consider the normal process of procrastination:

1. You think about doing something.

Isn't that how you start a task? You think about doing it. Sometimes you think about it so much that you brain gets overwhelmed and shuts down, or you turn yourself off completely from doing it.

2. You notice how it feels.
Every thought generates a feeling or emotion. When it feels good, we do the task. That's why it's so easy to get off the couch to get a bag of chips. It's not as easy to leave the couch to go outside and paint the gutters or go for a run.

3. If it feels bad, you avoid it.

You have your own, consistent ways of deflecting the task. Each one of us has developed our own set of procrastination habits that has continuously led us to remain stuck in a rut. The first step is acknowledging what your habit patterns are. Do you know what you do when you're in procrastinating mode? Make a list of the things you do to avoid a task. This will help you see what you need to do to overcome each one.

4. When the feeling of putting it off feels worse than the feeling of doing it, you finally act.
This is when you eventually (and begrudgingly) pay your taxes, take out the trash, apply for a job, or work on your term paper.

This is a very common process. Unfortunately, it doesn't work well if you're trying to get ahead or to prevent your life from descending into chaos.

Try an alternative method for dealing with unpleasant tasks, and overcoming procrastination mindset:

1. When you feel bad about a task, get excited that you're being given an opportunity to learn success skills. This is the moment that defines your future success and aligns you with the path of your highest potential. The least successful people are the worst procrastinators. Successful people always do the hard things. Remember that every time you start to go down the abyss of negativity when you feel overwhelmed with a task.

2. Take a minute to just sit with your feelings and notice them. Acknowledge and accept your discomfort. Close your eyes and breathe slowly. Notice where you feel the disturbance. Is it in your head? Your chest? Stomach? Try to relax that area of your body and release the tension. Many times when we overthink a situation we end up with brain fog and this causes stress in our whole system. Pay attention to where your discomfort is coming from.

3. Spend five minutes doing the task you want to avoid. Set a timer if you have to. Anyone can handle just five minutes. Getting started is the hardest part, so become an expert on getting started! You'll often find that you'll continue beyond your five-minute goal. This is called creating momentum, and will help you get past the initial hardship of starting a task you’ve been procrastinating. Congratulate yourself for lasting at least five minutes.

4. Forgive yourself for failing. Some days you win, others you lose. Working through discomfort and defeating procrastination is a challenging skill to learn. Don’t worry about not getting it right the first time, just make sure you keep practicing until you become accustomed to completing the tasks that will help you be successful.

Procrastination is a very human habit. There's little doubt that its origins were helpful. Poor decisions could be disastrous 100,000 years ago. Our brains had to be thoroughly convinced that an idea was worthy of execution before it would allow us to act. These days, however, procrastination can single handedly destroy your goals and dreams if you don’t overcome them. Decide for yourself that right now is the time to move forward and take one step toward your success. Use your urge to procrastinate as fuel for learning to be successful. Your future success will thank you.

3 Keys For Business Success

If you’re a business owner, you probably want your business to be successful. Unfortunately, no matter what product or service your business offers, (even if it is the best on the market) if you don't communicate that effectively, attractively, and consistently to your target audience you may never grow your business to its fullest potential.
The message and benefit of the product or service you offer must be crystal clear and felt deeply by your clientele to entice them to want to buy from you or work with you. This is an impactful artform that many businesses fail to invest in, so it’s no mystery why 90% of startups end up failing.

Establishing a solid foundation that will help you stand out above the rest so you can advance and scale your business exponentially is the best thing you can do for the growth of your business.
To establish this foundation, and set your business up to stand the test of time and profit margins, you need to ensure that you have the following 3 keys for business success:
  1. A powerful business strategy – A business strategy is a clear set of plans, actions, and goals that outlines how a business will compete in a particular market with their products or services. It literally defines exactly what needs to be done to reach business goals. A business strategy is everything when it comes to business growth and success.
  2. A bold and beautiful stand-out brand – A well-designed visual identity doesn’t just support your business, it elevates it. A strong brand instantly communicates who you are, what you’re about, and why people should want to interact with you. This includes the feeling your brand will incite in your clients, and the story you tell with your marketing.
  3. An impactful marketing plan – The marketing plan is the strategy that a company will use to market its products or services to customers. The plan identifies the target market, the value proposition of the brand, the campaigns to be initiated, and the assessment of effectivity. Marketing is one of the most important parts of growing a business and should always include the “6 Ps” of Marketing: Product, Price, Place, Promotion, Participation, and Purpose.

These 3 keys for business success are not optional, they are mandatory for all businesses if they are to stand the test of time. All 3 must work together simultaneously to create business advancement harmony. Many start-ups without experience end up failing because they either skipped one or more of these keys or went head first without guidance or support from a professional to help them avoid costly mistakes. Investing in professional services that can help implement these 3 keys successfully will help solidify you as a leader in your business industry and will help root your business on solid ground so your potential for growth is exponential. This area of your business growth is one I highly recommend invest in, because it is what could make or break your business success.

Starting A Business Begins With An Idea

Contrary to what many people believe, it is very easy to start a business. It is also simple to maintain, and grow a very lucrative, profitable, and successful business, even without any experience. Anyone can take almost any idea, expertise or talent that they may have and turn it into a business that they can run and grow for years to come.

In my many years being in business for myself, one of the common themes that I have come across is that many people are intimidated at the very thought of starting a business because they think it will be too difficult to be successful. So they let doubt and fear seep in and mentally psyche themselves out before giving it a fair chance. I'm here to tell you that all you need to start a successful business are:  determined vision, focused commitment, and an idea!

Almost any idea can be grown to be a successful business. Everybody reading this right now has multiple talents, abilities, and expertise that are unique to themselves that they can expand and grow into a successful business. One of my initial mentors started their multi millionaire dollar business by selling peanuts. Yes, peanuts.  Your idea does not have to be huge, vast, or even unique. It only has to be strong enough for you to want to flow with it and grow with it.

If you don’t have an idea yet, start by listing 5 to 10 virtues, talents, abilities, skills, or level of expertise that you have that you could potentially want to grow into a business. Once you have a few solid ideas in mind, the next step is to begin to brainstorm and explore them to come up with some viable business ideas. This is the beginning of your business journey. Of course, growing a business also requires the right Branding, Marketing, and Strategy (more on that later), but it all begins with an idea. Without that, you have nothing.

No matter who you are, what you do, or what your expertise is, you can start a business and you can be extremely successful growing that business. Please do not let any fear, misconception, or doubt prevent you from freeing yourself financially and allowing your life to develop on your terms and not anybody else’s.
